It is a historical narrative written by Guibert of Nogent between 1107-1108 A.D. It explains the history of the First Crusade. Guibert himself was not a crusader but wrote the book based on what he had heard from crusaders that he personally knew and had talked to. The Dei Gesta Per Francos provides priceless information about how the Crusade was recieved by France.

The Dei Gesta also contains moral and spiritual teachings that the reader may also gain lessons in. Some critics have said it contains elements of prophecy showing how the First Crusade could have been part of a larger divine plan.

The Dei Gesta Per Francos is a 'Medieval Allegory' which is the combintion of biblical and classical traditions. It contains four elements.

-Literal

-Typological

-Moral

-Anagogical

Similar to the bible it works on different levels of understanding.
